Film & TV Language: Mise-en-scene

Passengers (2016)

Costume & actors: In this particular still image from the movie 'Passengers', we can see Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) and Jim (Chris Pratt) seeming to be in a serious conversation with each other. This is evident with the expressions on their faces. Jim is wearing a space suit which is typical as this movie is in the sci-fi genre. This also hints at the fact that Jim is about to do something life threatening- this is typically how males are portrayed in the media. They are usually the protagonist/hero who save others by dealing with the situation. Aurora is wearing a tight black dress which is quite revealing. This is typically how females are portrayed in the media- objectified and sexualised and this suggests that she is Jim's lover and the heroine. These two characters are also the only ones in the shot, those who have seen the movie will know that this is because they are the only ones awake on the space ship at this time.

Makeup:  In this shot, the actors' faces are not clearly visible so it s quite difficult to accurately see the make up. However, we can see that the make up has been done to a minimal, almost to make it seem that Aurora is not wearing any. This is probably to link to the idea that they are alone on this ship and that she doesn't have time or the reason the wear any because saving the ship is more important.

Props & Setting:
In this shot, the setting clearly depicts that they are in a space ship. The setting is very modern and futuristic, the colours blue and white are mainly used which contribute to making the whole movie feel sci-fi. There is also another space suit in the middle of both characters. This suggests that this extra costume is for Aurora and leads us to believe that she isn't just there to be Jim's lover. She also ultimately helps in saving Jim and the ship which subverts the initial stereotypes of how females are portrayed in the media.

Lighting:
There is lots of light used in this shot. This is to brighten up the shot and make everything clear to see for the audience. Furthermore, lighting is used to reinforce the sci-fi feel in the movie. There are lights used on the ceiling, floor and on the walls to reinforce the idea that this is a modern and futuristic movie.

What Happened to Monday (2017)

Costume & actors:
In this movie, the clothing used is quite casual for all characters and the normal people living in the dystopian city. However, Nicolette Cayman (played by Glenn Close) who is the leader of this city is the only one dressed in expensive clothing and accessories. This reinforces how she is the dominant one in the movie and highlights the immense difference in hierarchy- the normal people are poor and suffer while those in power are living in luxury. It is quite interesting that the 7 girls in which the movie focuses around all play the role of one identity- Karen Settman (played by Noomi Rapace). When they are pretending to be her they all wear the same clothes and makeup which create the character of Karen- a working woman. However, when the sisters are by themselves, hidden in their home, they all delve in to their own personality and identity. For example, Saturday is the fun party girl, Friday is the technology expert with glasses, Wednesday is the athletic one, and so on. I think this is what makes this movie so interesting.

Makeup:The makeup used in this movie is very minimal and natural. I think this is so that the audience can mainly focus on the action and story line. The only time extra make up is used is when the sisters take on the role of Karen Settman. They wear a bold red lip colour which informs the audience that this is them changing their identity and risking their lives.

Props & setting:
The movie is set in a dystopan society. The city seems to be in ruins and there is a lot of destruction. The houses are tightly packed as the people are struggling to survive in the limited space there is. Despite this outdated city, there are many elements that hint this movie is set in the future. There are lots of modern gadgets and places. For example, the machine that puts the children in to cyrosleep, the gadgets the sisters use to share information to each other every day, the wristbands that scans everyone in the city and much more.

Lighting:
The lighting used while inside the sisters' house is mainly dark and dull. This is probably to symbolise how trapped they feel. This lighting is also used in the city. However when it comes to Cayman, the lighting is very bright. This is to highlight the extent of power she holds.

The Little Mermaid (2017)

Costume & actors:
This fantasy movie features many costumes in order to contribute to the story line. For example the little mermaid costume, the Harrisons' costume, etc.

Makeup:
The makeup used is very minimal even on the mermaid. This is perhaps to highlight the fact that she comes from the sea where everything is natural.

Props & setting:The film is set in an older time. This is made evident from the characters' clothing. There is also a circus. Most importantly, some parts of the film are set under water.

Lighting:
There are many different lighting used throughout the movie. At one point there is red lighting used behind the man in charge of the circus. This is to highlight how this man is sinister.

Dismissed (2017)

Costume & actors:
This movie is set in the present time so the characters are dressed in contemporary clothing. The teenagers are also dressed in clothing that suits the school environment that they are in.

Makeup:
There is barely any makeup used in this film. This is perhaps because the main character (Dylan Sprouse) is a male so does not require any makeup. Also, the movie is set mostly in school so there isn't much need for it.

Props & setting:
As mentioned above, this movie is set in a school so there is many props that contribute to this. For example, books, pencils, desks, etc.

Lighting:
The lighting used is fairly simple and natural. However towards the end of the trailer, we can see that the lighting becomes more dark and ominous. This is to depict the drastic change in the personality of the protagonist towards the end.
