Lighting: still image analysis

Picture #1:

In this still image low-key lighting is mainly used. This creates the chiaroscuro effect- lots of dramatic shadows. It depicts to the audience the drama and mystery associated with this woman. However there is also some top lighting used on the female's face. This allows the audience to see her face and read her expressions despite the fact that the rest of her isn't visible due to the lack of lighting.

Picture #2:

In this image the use of back lighting is very evident. This is what creates the silhouette on the pavement. The use of the back lighting as well as low-key lighting creates a sense of mystery and makes the characters almost appear dangerous.

Picture #3:

In this low angle image, lots of low-key lighting is used which is what has created the extensive contrast between dark and light in this image. The character is made to seem intimidating and very powerful. There is also some top lighting used on his face which further reinforces his importance.

Picture #4:

This image is very different from the rest of the stills. High-key lighting is used which makes the scene more realistic. This allows the audience to relate to the couple in the image. Furthermore, there is natural lighting coming in from the blinds that creates shadows on the males' face. This further reinforces the realism associated with this scene.
