The impact of new/digital media on TV: blog task

Go to our Media Magazine archive and read the article on Netflix and the Cultural Industries(MM63 - page 45) and answer the following questions:

1) What does the 'industry' concept in A Level Media Studies refer to?

It refers to the companies that create and distribute media texts, the standard practices of media production, as well as the regulatory and legal frameworks in which the companies operate.

2) What does David Hesmondhalgh argue with regards to how the creative industries have changed since the 1980s?

He argues that there has been a significant shift in cultural production in the creative industries.

3) Choose the three most significant points Hesmondhalgh makes regarding the changing cultural industries. Why are these the most significant in your view?

1) Cultural industries have moved closer to the centre of economic action.
2) There has been an increase in media corporations owning companies in different sectors of the industry.
3) Globalisation has meant media texts can circulate more easily across borders.

I think that these are the most significant points that have led to a change in the cultural industries because of the level of expansion they have created in the media industry. Firstly, cultural industries have become more credited and good for business. Furthermore, the fact that media corporations are vertically integrating with other companies in different sectors means that they have become more powerful. Also, globalisation has been a huge help for the media industry as it is now possible to access content from all around the world in so many different ways.

4) What is technological convergence?

Technological convergence refers to the fact that every media form can be accessed on computers due to the digitisation of media.

5) How are technology companies challenging traditional broadcasters in the TV industry?

Technology companies, such as AmazonPrime Video and Netflix are challenging traditional broadcasters in the TV industry dramatically. They now produce their own movies and TV programmes that are available to watch on-demand, a way of watching that is much more favourable than traditional broadcasters schedules and specific timings. With Netflix and Amazon, audiences are able to watch what ever they want, whenever they want and as much times as they like.

6) What budgets will Netflix, Amazon and Apple spend on original programming next year?

Netflix- plans to spend $8 billion on original material
AmazonAmazon’s budget is estimated at $4.5 billion
Apple$1 billion

7) How many countries are Netflix and Amazon available in?

Netflix- 190 countries

Amazon- 200 countries

8) The global nature of modern television means producers are having to consider international audiences when creating content. What example from Netflix does the article use to explain this?

The article uses the Netflix original series 'Stranger things' as an example of how producers need to consider international audiences really carefully when creating content. The monster in Stranger Things is named 'Demogorgon' after a Dungeons & Dragons demon
prince. Netflix's team had to research how various cultures translated ‘Demogorgon’ in the mid-1970s. Consequently the Demogorgon was renamed in some parts of the world based on what the demon prince of Dungeons & Dragons was called.

Furthermore, Netflix has made sure that they use the same foreign voice actors for particular actors when dubbing a series.

9) Do you think technology companies such as Google, Facebook and Amazon will increase their interest in the television industry?
I think that they will try to expand to other parts of the television industry but they will have to come up with really unique, innovative ideas in order to attract an audience because Netflix is hard to beat in terms of content.
10) How do changes in technology influence the creation of TV dramas such as Capital or Deutschland 83

The change in technology has led to the creation of TV dramas such as Capital and Deutschland 83. In terms of Capital, it was broadcast on the BBC, which struggles to compete with new technology companies, so the drama is very different and compelling- 'a state of the nation drama'.

In terms of Deutschland 83, which is available on all4, the drama is unique in the fact that it is in German and based on German history. Foreign language dramas have become increasingly popular with the rise of globalisation so that is what influenced this drama.
